MKO (founded by Michael Oberhauser) has built a striking cross-generation creation called the "CS M5," fusing the classic 1970s BMW E9 3.0 CSL body with the running gear of an E39-generation M5. The car is now listed on the European version of Bring a Trailer.The build started life as an E39 M5. The MKO team stripped the original body structure and shortened the wheelbase by roughly 20cm, then fabricated a compact two-door coupe shape using panels from two E9 CS bodies. The front fenders were widened by about 2.5 inches (6.4cm) and the rear by about 4 inches (10cm). Most of the bodywork and welding was carried out in Romania - an enormous undertaking.
The exterior pays tribute to the iconic 3.0 CSL "Batmobile," with a roof spoiler, fender fins, retro Hella fog lights, and 3.0 CSL badging on the flanks. The car is finished in a Porsche paint code and rides on 19-inch Alpina-style wheels wrapped in Continental SportContact 7 tires.
Inside, the M5's dashboard and center console carry over, now paired with heated Recaro bucket seats, dual-zone climate control, power windows, and a Pioneer touchscreen head unit, with the gear mode switches integrated into the console. Power comes from a rebuilt 4.9-liter S62 V8 producing around 426 horsepower, paired with a six-speed manual and a limited-slip differential. Suspension has been upgraded to adjustable KW coilovers, with braking handled by the M5's stock setup.
For BMW enthusiasts, this build is a great example of giving a classic shell a second life with a previous-generation performance flagship's heart.
