BMW Never Built This — But One Fan Did
BMW never built an E9 CSL with a 400-plus-horsepower V8 and a six-speed manual. But one enthusiast did, and now the result — a hand-crafted fusion of 1970s coupe styling and E39 M5 muscle — is looking for a new owner on Bring a Trailer Germany.
Far More Than a Body Swap
The build was created by German outfit MKO, founded by enthusiast Michael Oberhauser, roughly a decade ago. The E39 M5's floorpan was shortened by approximately 8 inches (203 mm), the upper body removed, and an E9 CS roof grafted on. Parts from two E9 CS coupes were used to complete the body. Front arches were widened by around 2.5 inches (64 mm) and rears by about 4 inches (102 mm), with much of the fabrication carried out by skilled craftsmen in Romania.
Batmobile Details, M5 Power
The car pays homage to the legendary CSL "Batmobile" with a roof spoiler, fender fins, Hella driving lights, and 3.0 CSL badging. It sits on 19-inch Alpina-style wheels with Continental SportContact 7 tires. Under the hood, the rebuilt 4.9-liter S62 V8 produces 426 hp (432 PS), sent through a six-speed manual and a limited-slip differential. KW adjustable coilovers and original M5 brakes keep it in check.
Modern Cabin, Classic Silhouette
Inside, the M5 dashboard remains intact with heated Recaro seats, dual-zone climate, and a Pioneer touchscreen. The driver's door window switch has been relocated to the center console.
